Student Moving Checklist – Move Out Without the Stress

Moving out of halls or a student house is much easier with a plan. Use this checklist from four weeks before your move-out date to the day you hand the keys back.

4 weeks before

• Check your contract for the exact move-out date and time, and the inventory and cleaning requirements.
• Decide what is going home, what is going to your next address and what needs storing over the summer.
• Get an instant quote and book your van early. Popular end-of-term dates fill up first.
• Ask housemates if they want to share a van: see housemate group moves.

2 weeks before

• Collect free boxes from shops, or buy strong boxes. Small boxes for books, bigger ones for bedding and clothes.
• Start packing things you will not need: out of season clothes, books, decorations.
• Sort what to sell, donate or recycle instead of moving it.
• Read how to pack for storage if your items are staying with us over summer.

1 week before

• Label every box with the room and a short list of contents.
• Defrost the freezer and empty the fridge.
• Take photos of the room, walls and appliances for your deposit.
• Arrange for bikes, desks and shelves to be dismantled. We can do this for £28.50.
• Tell us the floors and whether there is a lift. Stairs without a lift are £9.50 per floor.

Moving day

• Keep keys, passport, laptop, chargers and medication with you, not in the van.
• Have a clear route from the door to the van and tell the driver about any fragile items.
• Do a last check of cupboards, drawers and under the bed.
• Hand back your keys and take a photo of the clean room.
